Cross-Institutional Collaboration

Bridge to Success: Building a bridge from preschool to a postsecondary degree for all San Francisco youth.

Bridge to Success has developed several cross-institutional collaborations that aim to double the number of students earning college degrees or credentials. These efforts focus on ways in which education systems – such as the school district and City College – can work together rather than separately to accomplish mutual goals.

Examples of these efforts include:

  • Creating forums for faculty from City College and SFUSD to discuss and explore ways to align curricula across institutions. In 2010-11, Bridge to Success sponsored a series of six professional learning community sessions for SFUSD and City College faculty to explore alignment, ways to collaborate, and joint professional development. Approximately 15 math faculty and 20 English faculty from both institutions participated. In 2011-12, math faculty from both institutions continue to meet and explore these topics.
  • Bringing counselors and math and English faculty from the school district and from the community college together for joint trainings, networking events, and sessions to brainstorm ways they can enhance each others’ efforts.
  • Convening stakeholders from City College, the school district, and community-based organizations to design new summer programs and outreach activities that help students, particularly those who are first in their family to attend college or face other obstacles, be prepared for success in the fall. New partnerships were formed to create these new summer activities.
