Bridge to Success Summer Program

What is the Bridge to Success Summer Program?

The Bridge to Success Summer Program is a 6-week summer transition program for historically underrepresented, low-income and first-generation SFUSD 2011 high school graduates who plan to enroll at City College of San Francisco (CCSF) in the fall. Over the course of the program, students will have the opportunity to take academic courses at CCSF, participate in workshops on various college-success related topics, develop new friendships with their cohort, and receive personalized coaching from recent college graduates.

What will the program achieve?

Research shows that many underrepresented students often experience a “summer flood” the summer between their high school graduation and college matriculation during which even those with plans to go to college reconsider their college plans because they become overwhelmed by everything required to successfully transition from high school to college. The goal of the program is to prevent the “summer flood” and equip students with the tools they need to be successful in their first year at CCSF and beyond.

Students will have the opportunity to take some of the remedial coursework required of them, enabling them to move into credit-bearing classes sooner and graduate faster. In addition, College Coaches will work with students to help them overcome the specific challenges they face and will continue working with them throughout their first year in college. Most importantly, students will develop a robust network of peers, faculty and staff who will help them build a foundation for academic, financial, social and personal success.

Who developed the program?

The Bridge to Success Summer Program was developed by Beyond 12, in partnership with members of the San Francisco College Bound Network (CBN). Beyond 12 is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to increase the number of low-income, first generation, and historically underrepresented students who graduate from our nation’s colleges and universities. Through an innovative technology platform and a student coaching service, Beyond 12 helps high schools and colleges connect with and support their students to ensure they earn a postsecondary degree. CBN is a network of Bay Area academic enrichment, college access, college persistence and scholarship programs whose missions are to prepare underrepresented students for success in college, career and life. CBN member organizations participate in collaborative efforts to support youth in high school, during transitional phases between high school and college, and continuing during college years.
